A review of: Old Man’s War by John Scalzi

Old Man’s War is one of my favorite books, hands down. Possibly my favorite Scalzi book.

I don’t even want to throw spoilers out. I just want to say read this book.

Top level, it really explores what it means to be human. Not just due to the changes and genetic modifications, but how you can remain human when you serve a purpose of killing, albeit for peace. That’s what really hit home. Not knowing if you’re the person you were before, and coming to terms with who you are now. I also see a parallel to recent talk about the possible colonization of the moon and Mars by humans, and the (hopefully soon) exploration of deep space.

I do wish I felt more invested in the majority of the characters, but I honestly found myself more invested in Jane Sagan, and really wanted more to explore there. Five stars overall though in my opinion.

I’m super glad to have heard recently that Netflix will be doing something with this. I dig SyFy, but I can’t help but think Netflix will do this story justice.
